AK STEEL CONTINUOUS & ANNEALING PICKLE LINE
LOCATION:     Rockport, IN
CLIENT: AK Steel
VALUE: $30,000,000
TRADES: Multi-trade
DATE: 1999

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The State Group performed the electrical installation work for a high-performance pickling line for a carbon and stainless strip steel and an annealing and pickling line for hot and cold-rolled stainless steel strips. Both lines are installed in the cold rolling complex in AK Steel`s 1.8 million tons per year facility in Rockport, Indiana.
The State Group Inc. performed the electrical installation work for a high-performance pickling line for a carbon and stainless strip steel and an annealing and pickling line for hot and cold-rolled stainless steel strips. Both lines are installed in the cold rolling complex in AK Steel`s 1.8 million tons per year facility in Rockport, Indiana.
High-performance pickling line
The pickling line is for products of up to 80" (2.032 m) wide. The high-performance pickling line, designed for 2,296 fpm (700 m/min.) in the entry section, 787 fpm (240 m/min.) in the processing section and 1,640 fpm (500 m/min.) at the coiler, is among the most efficient in the world. Cold-rolled strips made from carbon steel and stainless steel AISI 409 are produced, primarily for the automotive and appliance industries. The coil weights are 45 t on the entry side and 60 t on the exit side. Advantages include surface quality, increased output, energy and fluid savings as well as environmental soundness.

Annealing and pickling line
This line is used for hot and cold-rolled stainless steel strips AISI 300 and 400. It is designed for entry speeds of 425 fpm (130 m/min.) for hot strip, 850 fpm (260 m/min.) for cold strip, and in the processing section for a speed of 225 fpm (70 m/min.) for hot strip and 500 fpm (150 m/min.) for cold strip. The annealing and pickling line produces material up to 60" (1.524 m) wide, thus making it one of the widest annealing and pickling lines in North America.

Scope included: Double-strip entry, fully automatic laser welder, strip cleaning section, annealing furnace, mechanical pre-descaling section, pickling section with the aforementioned turbulence process, 4-high temper mill, tension leveler, exit section with one-sided trimmer and dividing shear, inspection stand and coiler. Commissioning of both lines is scheduled for mid-1999.
